Take one very lovely book of shetland shawl patterns

Add computer software for making your own charts

Find some cobweb yarn and a pair of slightly oversized needles

Decide you like a chart that will work out to be 52 stitches by 84 rows

Give up and go back to looking at the pictures in the book
